Animation mockup, just because.  Still playing with what kinds of textures I want to have over everything, and other things.  This isn’t anything that will appear in the final version at all, I just wanted to see if I could do it. :D  I’m pretty happy with the result.
If you haven’t checked the game’s site before, this is probably the first time you’re seeing Reece’s face. :O  …And hearing his name!! 8O

Announcement time announcement time!!
You know my Magical Garden Dating Game project??  Its title is actually Gardd Cariad, it has its own site (just a placeholder image for now), and a Tumblr, too. :O
Follow it for news and updates and art and such!!
(Or not, because I’ll be reblogging all of it here, too.)
ANYWAY
Because I was feeling sick today I really just did art work all day.  Made a ton of progress on my commissions, then to treat myself afterward I tried out making a talking animation.  IT WAS FUN. O3O

Things I have done on my 12-hour train ride

Internet connection flickers out frequently so I haven’t been able to get any real work done, and the ride is too shaky to do serious arts so sadly no work on folks’ commissions today, but I think I’ve packed a lot of surprisingly fun stuff into these many, many hours???

  • Drew (like, physically, in an actual sketchbook) a huge and somewhat elaborate group pic of ST☆RISH + Cecil

I actually had this like halfway finished before even getting on the train & while just sitting around at the station.  I DO NOT traditional art, and I DO NOT group pics, especially ones with seven characters like jeezus how did I even do that???  Anyway the UtaPri boys are arranged in rainbowlogical order (I’m always surprised that there isn’t more art that arranges them like this??) and are all holding hands / hooking arms and basically being huge homos but omg I think it turned out so cute, I can’t wait to get this sketch on my laptop so I can work on it for real.  Not to mention it was fun finally drawing all of the characters, since up til now I have only drawn Masato and Syo. @_@

  • Rewrote one of the guys’ endings in my Magical Garden Dating Game

A thing I want to be prominent in my dating game is a sense of magic and adventure, and that each guy’s ending involves some kind of daring rescue that ties in to what their main conflict was earlier in the route.  This one guy’s ending in particular just wasn’t awesome enough for my tastes (& also didn’t tie in to his conflict very well), so I made it awesomer.  Yay.

  • Read three more chapters of Sherlock Holmes

I’ve had the complete collection of Sherlock Holmes stories in my possession for like 4-5 years and I seem to read them at a rate of 1 chapter a year.  Today I blew through The Blue Carbuncle, The Speckled Band, and the one about the engineer guy who got his thumb hacked off.  Good times all around.

  • Played a lot of unfinished games/demos I’ve had sitting on my laptop for a while

Unreliable Internet access (+ the fact that all video-watching sites are blocked) stomped my plan to spend this trip marathoning anime, so I sought offline entertainment and finally played through a lot of the otome games I’ve been meaning to get to.  Played the demo of Duplicity, seems p cool, I like the doctor.  Played through Henri’s route of Heartful Chance after doing Kouhei’s way back when I first download the game, I’ve just gotta say you need to look past the art work of this one and give it a chance, it really is just an adorable and charming story and while Henri seemed exactly like my least favorite character archetype ever, the creator did an excellent job in destroying what your expectations of him are and turning his route into a totally sweet one.  Played through Liam’s route in Ristorante Amore, got both the Best Friend end and the romantic one, although the best friend one was an accident lol oops.  Still pretty sure nothing will beat Ethan’s route in that game because it was so tender and sweet, but definitely not complaining about Liam’s route because I can’t complain about anything pertaining to dudes kissing.

  • Accidentally came up with a new idea for a different otome game to make some time in the future??

Joked with Aaron last night about “what if there were an otome game where the protagonist likes to play otome games and you can play her games while playing the game” and suddenly more brainstorming happened and now I actually have something fleshed out for this??  Now it’s evolved into “you’re a new hire at a company that makes otome games and you mostly just do boring intern stuff for the Writer, Artist, and Programmer (hint hint those are the guys you can date) until they invite you to playtest a game that’s close to being released (in which you can date a Friendly Classmate, Bad Boy, or Flirty Guy) and the way that you play through that game determines the way the guys who make the game interact with you (i.e. “Oh, you’re going for the Bad Boy?  Didn’t think you were the type…”) until eventually they ask for your help for the ending and it turns into a confession and actual ending for the game.”  Good idea, y/n????  Oh and you can choose whether the protagonist is male or female because yay boys kissing.

Dude looks like a layday, do de do duude looks like a laydaay

Spoiler alert: This is a plot point.

Okay my intention was to keep Magical Garden Dating Game teasers to a minimum this month, since I wanted it to be really special and exclusive to the folks who visit me in person at Otakon and pick up one of my business cards, which is where I was going to reveal all six of the guys’ full faces and final designs
but this is what’s staring at me from my computer screen while I’m working and I cannot even concentrate on what I’m doing
THAT FACE AHhhhhhhHHHGHG I CREATED THIS?@!?!?@#3
this is a dude btw and he’s the ‘special’ date-able candidate and also the first (!!!) fairy that you meet.  He’s pink ‘cause he inhabits a flower in your garden and the flower is pink and soo… also I… just r  e  a  l  l  y like pink-haired guys………….

Let’s do that thing again where I share Magical Garden Dating Game art to bump down what’s at the top of my blog haha. 8D;
I have 4.5 out of 6 arts done of the ‘final’ versions of these guys (it’s all up in the air for pretty much ever) and you’ll be able to see their full faces on the business cards I’m printing up for Otakon~  So come and visit me and say hi and pick one up! ^o^  (And after that weekend, I’ll share the finished art here, too, of course!)
((Oh and also on the business card will be the actual title of the game))
(((I hope no one thought it was actually going to be called Magical Garden Dating Game…)))
The guy we’re getting a glimpse at here is the first one you meet in the game. ♥  He is energetic and cheerful and very eager to become your friend!  What a cutie.  Hi-res~

Filling up a notebook is a HUGE accomplishment. The fact that it’s for a dating sim project is AWESOOOOOME.

Thanks!! ^ 3^  I’ve never filled up a notebook before in my entire life. @_@  Even for school and stuff I would start using a new notebook before the last 20 or so pages of the old one were filled.  I’ve kept diaries and sketchbooks and brainstorming journals all my life, and in each of those I’ve always skipped over pages, left chunks of blank pages in the back, and overall just used them really sparingly.

This project has become really important to me for like so many reasons I can’t even list or even IDENTIFY them all. ; 3;  I’m pouring my heart into this and I can’t wait to see it culminate into something that other people can enjoy as much as I am right now. n_n

Last night, I reached 100 pages in my little journal I have for everything I’m writing for the Magical Garden Dating Game. ♥  This is the fastest I’ve ever filled up a journal EVER.  Over half of the journal’s pages are used now - I might even reach the end of it and need to upgrade to a second journal. O_O

Especially at the rate I’m writing at now. ♥  Since I polled everyone for how long a visual novel ought to be, I’m beefing up the content so that each route is longer.  I’ve extended each guy’s route so that you continue playing for a bit even after they’ve confessed to you, and you spend some time doing some conflict-resolving and/or mystery-solving adventures together.

I almost blurred or scribbled out the writing in the first photo, but I figured “nahh” and went ahead and let this be a little teaser of some dialogue for a date event for you! n3n (I’m embarrassed sharing it ;A;)  The only thing that’s blurred out is the guy’s name, since I haven’t released those yet.  The dialogue that begins with “G:” is Gwen’s.

By the way, here’s some music that actually is in my game.  I’ll definitely be using this in preview videos/trailers, it is just perfectly epic, and I don’t use that word carelessly.  Perfectly expresses the magic and adventure that I want to convey in my game… you didn’t think you were going to spend the whole game only flirting with boys, did you?

Figured it was only fair to share this little teaser after talking about my audio choices in the previous post. ♥

Man do I ever wish I could use this in my game.  It’s the latter half of the Kingdom Dance track from Tangled’s soundtrack (I have posted this once before, actually).  I trimmed this audio file down myself so it’s just the part that I like… (Sorry, Disney…)

I keep listening to this over and over and it’s just inspiring me so much. ♥

Open question to otome gamers:

Approximately how many hours of play time do you anticipate or think are worth spending on a visual novel that you spent money on?

Do you have a preference for being able to complete a route in a single sitting (like under 2 hours I guess - just throwing that number out there really idk), or do you think you’d feel ripped off if you finished a route in one sitting?  Li’l edit: My game will have six guys’ routes, with little deviations in them… so even in the hypothetical scenario where you can finish a guy’s route in one sitting, that’s still at least six times you’d have to sit down and play through the game.

Or any other thoughts you might have on the subject? :3?
